Issue Position: On Family & Religion

I think the strength of a society in culture is really built on the foundation of family and family structure. One of the things that has had me concerned for many years in our society today is a breakdown or an erosion of the strength of American families. Really strong families make strong communities and make strong countries. I believe that some of the policies of the federal government have worked to undermine the family unit.

For example, I have fought the marriage tax penalty throughout my career in the U.S. Congress. The marriage tax penalty is where many people get married and they pay higher taxes so they don't get married.. I just think that's wrong. I also believe that religion is a critical part of our society and culture and our government should be doing everything that it can not to meddle in religious affairs. The separation of church and state is to keep the government out of the church and this recent decision of the Obama administration to force some of the church institutions, like the Catholic church, to provide services that are against their religious beliefs is an erosion of our First Amendment freedoms.
